This is a recipe I use when I have leftover cabbage from making cole slaw or stuffed cabbage rolls (Rouladen Style). The amount of ingredients are an estimate because when I cook, I do it by tasting as I go. I started making this while cooking in the United States Air Force. The usual boiled cabbage on the menu got old and boring. The troops loved this kicked up fried cabbage recipe.
1/2 head cabbage (chopped)
6-8 slices bacon (cut in 1/2″ pieces)
1 medium onion (diced)
1 tbls butter
2 cloves crushed garlic
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup vinegar
2 beef bouillon cubes
salt & pepper and any other seasoning and spices you enjoy. (I went with some chili and curry powder along with some ground red pepper)
Saute bacon a couple minutes, then add onions and cook till translucent. Add butter and garlic and cook for a few minutes. Don’t burn the garlic. Been there, done that. Next add water, vinegar and beef cubes, heat till bouillon cubes are dissolved. Add cabbage and maybe 1 tsp of your favorites spices and seasoning to start. Stir and cover to steam cabbage for a few minutes. I like mine with a little crunch. Uncover and cook to till liquid has evaporated and continue to season to taste.
Any recipe with bacon, onion and garlic is always winner. Change it up and make this fried cabbage recipe your own.
